“Earthrise” – Photo by Apollo 8 crew member William A. Anders on December 24, 1968
50 years ago today, while in lunar orbit, the Apollo 8 astronauts read from the book of Genesis to the world. By reading the Bible’s account of origins on Christmas Eve, these astronauts clearly made the connection between Christmas and creation.
On this date in 1968, a live television broadcast from moon orbit started out with these words: “For all the people on Earth, the crew of Apollo 8 has a message we would like to send you”.

And to borrow the words of the Apollo 8 crew 50 years ago:
“And from the crew of CMI, we close with good night, good health, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you—all of you on the good Earth.”
